The following reading concepts are covered in the screening section of the
Grade 1 TPRI:
Graphophonemic Knowledge-the recognition of the letters of the alphabet
and the understanding of sound-symbol relationships.
Word Reading-the correct identification of words.
Phonemic Awareness-the ability to detect and identify individual sounds
within spoken words.
At Grade 1, the initial screening task is a list of 10 uppercase and lowercase
letters that the student is to identify by name and sound. Knowing letter sounds
is an early developing form of phonological awareness, that is, the student’s
awareness of the internal structure of speech.
In the second task, a list of words, selected for frequency and scaled for
difficulty, is provided to determine the student’s word recognition skill. The
student is asked to identify the words.
The final screening task is a phonemic awareness activity in which the student
is asked to listen to words divided into their individual sounds and then asked
to pronounce the words.
To be considered "Developed" on the beginning of the year Screening, students
must receive a score of 8, 9, or 10 on Screening 1 and a score of 3 or higher on

To be considered "Developed" on the end of the year Screening, students must
receive a score a score of
5-8 on Screening 4 OR a score of 5 or 6 on Screening 5.
