The following two concepts are evaluated in the Kindergarten screening
section of the TPRI:
Graphophonemic Knowledge–the recognition of letters of the alphabet and
the understanding of sound-symbol relationships.
Phonemic Awareness–the ability to detect and identify individual sounds
within spoken words.
In Kindergarten, the initial screening task consists of a list of 10 uppercase
and lowercase letters that the
student is asked to identify by name and sound.
The second screening task is a phonemic awareness activity in which the student
is asked to listen to words that have sounds separated. The student is then
asked to produce the word. For example, the teacher says
“sh - o - p” and the student says “shop.”
To be considered "Developed" on the middle of the year Screening, students must
receive a score of
4 or higher on Screening 1 OR a score of 6, 7, or 8 on Screening 2.
To be considered "Developed" on the end of the year Screening, students must
receive a score of
4 or higher on Screening 3 OR a score of 6, 7, or 8 on Screening 4.
The following four concepts are evaluated in the Kindergarten inventory
