Understanding Psychometrics
Early identification of reading skills and comprehension development provides teachers with useful information they can use to ensure that students receive the targeted attention needed. The use of informal data gathering will support teachers in the reading instruction provided to students. The TPRI is an early reading instrument designed to be administered in Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2.

How were the inventory components for the TPRI developed?

Each inventory is designed to permit a detailed, but informal, assessment of a child’s reading and reading-related skills. The primary purpose of the inventories is to assist the teacher in setting learning objectives for the child. By administering the inventory, the teacher may obtain further support for a judgment of the child’s..  to learn more >>

Overview
At all grade levels, the TPRI contains both a screening and an inventory section. The screening section is based upon a longitudinal database of Texas students. From the database, measures were developed that assist in predicting successful reading at the end of Grades 1, 2, and 3. The concepts evaluated in the screening portion of the TPRI were developed from this database and permit quick and fairly accurate identification of students who exhibit development of key reading concepts.

Students who are still developing concepts on the TPRI screen at the beginning of Grade 2 may be in need of more intensive reading intervention. This is the case because not only is the Grade 2 screen accurate in identifying those not at risk, it also becomes accurate in identifying students who will be one-half year or more below grade level (i.e., below the 35th percentile) in reading achievement at the end of Grade 2 if reading intervention is not undertaken. For more information, please read the TPRI technical manual at http://www.tpri.org.

Both the screening and inventory sections of the TPRI are designed to be administered by the classroom teacher with individual students. Teachers should refer to individual grade levels for information about  recommended times of administration. In general, the Kindergarten screening and inventory should be administered in mid January for the middle of the year and in mid April for the end of the year. In Grade 1, administration of the screening and inventory should occur in mid September for the beginning of the year and mid April for the end of the year. For the middle of the year inventory, administration should start mid January. In Grade 2, administration of the screening and inventory should take place mid September for the beginning of the year. For Grade 2 students, the inventory should also be group administered in mid January for middle of the year and in mid April for the end of the year.
